PEOPLE
George Mergos
He is Managing Director with over 40 years’ experience in development finance and in corporate governance. He combines extensive top management experience in the public and the private sector with an academic career, as Professor, Division of Development and International Economics, Department of Economics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
He is Vice Chair and Lead Independent Non-Executive Director of Terna Energy, an ASE listed company. He is also a BoD member of Frigo Debt Co Plc, a UK private company.
In addition, he is Board member of two private, non-profit, public-benefit organizations, IOBE and Maniatakeion Foundation.He has served in the past as Board member of Piraeus Real Estate, Alpha Bank, National Bank of Greece, Public Power Corporation and Chairman of PPC Renewables, GEK TERNA and other.
He has, also, served in top public service positions as Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy, Governor of IKA, Board member of Hellenic Financial Stability Fund and member of the Management Board of the Council of Europe Pension Reserve Fund.
He has served also as a member of the Governing Council of the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank. He has worked in the past with The World Bank and has consulted extensively with various international organizations (The World Bank, OECD, FAO, WHO), as well as with the European Commission (DG External Relations). He has participated in, or led, international missions on development assistance in many developing countries (many missions to China, India and other South Asia countries) and transition economies (all countries of former Eastern Europe and several countries of the former Soviet Union) as an expert on economic development investment and project and program evaluation.
